The Artist

Dave Scheffler is a pianist/keyboardist, composer and producer living in Joshua Tree, California. The son of an aerospace engineer who worked on the Saturn rocket at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama in the 1960s, Scheffler grew up predominantly in Charlotte, North Carolina. After high school, he played keyboards in a local fusion band, which opened for such names as Ramsey Lewis, Hubert Laws and the Dregs, before attending the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, where he graduated with honors.

Relocating to Los Angeles, he found work in the commercial music world – arranging, producing, and recording a diverse range of artists encompassing R&B, hip-hop, pop and world music.

Scheffler has returned to his jazz roots, channeling this meditative existence into an album of original compositions influenced by the cool modal jazz of the late ’50s/early ’60s (Miles Davis, Bill Evans) and fusion greats of the ’70s (Weather Report, Return to Forever), and on into the solo work of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.

Atomize is deeply rooted in the bright dreams of the Space Age, where all was possible. Inviting us to glide between timepoints in the late Atomic Age, somewhere between the launch of Telstar and the accident at Three Mile Island, a time of wide-eyed technological hope, a Star Trekking utopianism.

Reflecting a genre that assimilates styles while continually retaining its essence, through Atomize, Scheffler, with the influence of his cool jazz progenitors and fusion forefathers: Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, Dave weaves rich aural textures of rippling pianos, warm strings and analog synths with an intrepid saxophone at its melodic helm - punctuated throughout with freewheeling solos.

Dave composed these tunes while isolated in the Mojave Desert of Southern California during the pandemic lockdown. Then proceeded to procure an international cast of stellar players to breathe life into his innovative creations resulting in an ambitious project of unforgettable refrains of sound and rhythm.
